 OVERHEAD CRANE AND HOIST OPERATOR


Course Description
This class will focus on filling out and submitting reports for crane safety inspection, hoist inspection, wire rope/sling inspection, and chain/sling inspection. The curriculum, while structured, is meant to be flexible and upon prior request the instructor may focus on particular cranes or hoists from any facility. In this case, lessons will include plant specific material. The course can upon request, focus on a specific cranes/hoists used in the plant.

Course Prerequisites
Trainees scheduled for this program should be familiar with plant locations where cranes and hoists are used. To obtain the maximum benefit from this training, each student should possess a basic knowledge of overhead hoists, crane, balancers, wire rope slings and chain slings.


Course Objectives
Completion of this course will provide the trainee with the knowledge and skills required to establish a uniform safety procedure for conducting and recording safety inspection of cranes, hoists, wire rope cables/slings, and chain/slings, in accordance with the plant rules and regulations. Areas to be covered include filling out inspection reports, performing visual inspections, identifying inspection targets, and performing operational and running tests. Knowledge of performing these tasks will be specific and common breakdowns and remedies will be presented.

Intended Audience
This 8-hour program is intended for mechanical skilled trade’s personnel, or others whose responsibilities include inspecting, maintaining, operating, and troubleshooting all lifting devices, which include overhead cranes and hoists.

Duration
This is an 8-hour program for inexperienced and 4-hours for experienced, and must have equivalent working knowledge.

Student Enrollment
To ensure optimum hands on experience and instructor/trainee interaction, a maximum class size of 8 trainees is recommended.

Delivery Method
Course materials are presented via operation and safety handbook, stand-up lectures using a whiteboard, overhead transparencies, and handout material.
After satisfactorily completing the training program, the operator will be tested for proficiency with operation.


The plant must provide crane equipments.
